Cellphone tricks- Put your phone to better use
1. Unlocking a car
Have you ever locked your keys in the car?Does your car have a remote keyless entry? The following may come in handy someday - and it’s reason enough to own a cell phone : If you lock your keys in the car and your spare remote is at home or with your spouse, call that person on their cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person on the other end (the one with the spare remote) press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Believe it or not, your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you, and distance is no object . But if you are hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other “remote” for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).
2) Now imagine your cell phone cell battery is very low. To activate your phone and tap into the phone’s hidden battery power, press the keys * 3 3 7 0 #. Your cell phone miraculously will restart with this reserve power and the cell phone will register a 50% increase in battery charge. This reserve power will get charged when you charge your cell phone next time. Doesn’t work on my phone!
3) Use 112 as an emergency number. But you can also use this number to bypass security code of low end phones like Nokia 1100. Type 112 and make a call ( 112 is the only number which can be dialled from a locked phone). As soon as the call is going, switch off the phone. Now switch on. Security code is bypassed. But this method doesn’t work if the user has put the pincode request also on!
4)Dual Simcard adapter
How about using 2 simcards in one phone? One for home and other for business. I have tried it works good. I use Airtel and Hutch simultaneously. You can get one from your local mobile store . It changes connexion automatically once you switch the phone off and switch it on again.
5) Google Reader on the run
The only thing worse than being away from your e-mail is being away from your news feeds. If you’re a Google Reader user, your feeds can go where you go. Just point your browser to the mobile version of the Google Reader site: www.google.com/reader/m. This small-screen version of the site lets you view your feeds, your subscriptions and even your tags. Plus, it’s a Google-run product, meaning you’re not handing your user ID and password to a third-party developer.

Sony Xperia X1
Now that we’ve had some time to spend with the XPERIA X1, we’re going to break down the various features and give you our in-depth review. We’ll continue to update this post as we use the device more, but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand what’s at hand — a brand new Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1! Full review is after the jump. Pictures will be added shortly.
Screen:
With a 800×480 VGA screen, you can’t really go wrong right? Right. We’ve got to say off the top that this is the best-looking screen we’ve ever seen on a Windows Mobile device. It puts all the others to shame. It’s not just that the screen has an amazing resolution, it’s that the screen is vibrant and clear as day. If your vision isn’t top notch you might have to increase the font size in settings because it gets a little small with that super high-res. Sunlight couldn’t phase it either as we had no problem using it on the go outside.
Audio quality
We didn’t put the speakers through our normal tests just yet to be honest. We tried a couple MP3s and they sounded good, not great. The speaker volume in general could have been a little louder and the sound could have sounded a little fuller. Speakerphone was the same. We’ll report back with more detailed findings.
Notification lights
If you’ve seen the Sidekick LX, you’ll know what we’re talking about. There are 4 independant notification lights on the four corners of the X1. These are LED lights that change through various colors. Unlike the Sidekick, you have complete control over the notification settings. Only want people to think you’ve got a UFO in your pocket when you’re getting a text message? No problem. There’s a lot to choose from to suit your own needs. The lights offer a nice touch and weren’t too over-powering and bright which we were afraid of. The kids will love it.
Call quality
Calls came in and out with crystal clear quality. The ear speaker was plently loud and the party on the other end said we sounded like we were on a land line.
Data Connectivity
Name something you’d like to see in a mobile device… HSDPA? Wi-Fi? GPS? The X1 has all of it. T-Mobile USA lovers will also be overjoyed at the fact that an AWS 1700MHz version is coming. Our unit had the 850MHz/1900MHz US 3G bands so we were rockin’ over HSDPA just fine. In fact, web browsing was abnormally fast. We didn’t find much of a difference between browsing over Wi-Fi or HSDPA. That’s probably due to the bottleneck of the phone in general, but it was a pleasant surprise.
Build quality
Another winner for Sony Ericsson. While the device isn’t the lightest phone on the market, we think it’s build quality is almost second-to-none. Maybe even iPhone status. It’s just so sturdy and well put together. We have to give HTC some mad props on this one. Could you please try and incorporate some of this newfound metal addition into some of your devices HTC? Please. The sliding mechanism was fantastic even though the device isn’t a normal “flat” slider. Major points for build quality.
Usability factor
This could be subjective depending on your view of Windows Mobile, but we found the X1 to be on par or better than any Windows Mobile device we’ve used. Baring the keyboard issue, (see below) there wasn’t anything that hindered us from taking full advantage of the device. When closed, the device gives you access to all necessary shortcuts on the bottom front of the unit. Slide it open and you’ve got access to everything you could want. People have wrote us and asked about how it is to use the phone when the QWERTY keyboard doesn’t have directional keys, but they’ve overlooked something — the optical joystick. This works wonderfully well and doesn’t have a learning curve. It’s a natural extension of what we’ve been forced to use in the past. There was a “cursor” menu in settings but no cursor showed up on the screen. You also have full control over the sensitivity of the optical joystick. Making phone calls was comfortable and we didn’t have any issues with people hearing us or us hearing them.
Keyboard
The keyboard is a sensitive area for many people. Anyone who follows us know we take it very seriously — we put them all through the ringer! So, it pains us to report, that at least with our particular unit, the keyboard wasn’t great. It didn’t take time to get used to it, it just didnt perform like the way we had hoped. The reason is because the keys almost are completely flush with the case and don’t give good tactile feedback when pressed. Odly enough, the spacebar was actually ok. It faired the best out of all of them. We understand why there really is no travel in the keys — there is a huge sliding mechanism right over them — but we would have liked to see a little more feedback when typing. They have this triangular pattern on top which does make it easy to feel them, but you don’t get a good response when actually pressing them down. The backlight on the QWERTY ‘board successfully helped us find the keys when it was nightime, but that still didn’t help when typing. We said this before, but if we had to compare the keyboard to anything, it would be Sony’s UX-series computers. It’s the same exact thing.

Nokia N95 Debranding Guide
I have seen that a lot of people on various forums/blogs are in need of a guide showing how to debrand the Nokia N95.
Therefore I thought I would provide one. The information that I have collated to make this guide is found on various sites, these are referenced at the bottom of the post. Please also note that you run this procedure at your own risk; although I have performed this (3 times) with perfect results there is always the possibility when flashing your phone that you may damage it. If this happens you will require a Nokia service Centre to restore it.
The Guide:
1. Ensure that you have installed the Nokia PC Suite (on the CD supplied with the phone), make sure that your phone is connected via the USB cable and that it has been detected.
2. Download the following 2 pieces of software:
- The Nokia Software Updater - Note, although at the time of writing the site does not list the N95, the updater does include the updated N95 firmwear. Therefore simply select the N93 instead, this will then allow you do download the updater.
3. Install Nemesis Service Suite. Open the program and then click the "Scan for new Device" icon in the top right of the screen. The screen should then be filled with information, click the "Phone Info" button at the top of the screen. Then click the "Read" button. Amongst other things this will show you the current product code of your phone. You now need to change this to a generic Nokia code. A standard code for the UK that you can use is 0534841, for a full list of codes see The Nokia Blog. Replace the current product code with this new code. Then check the enable box and click the "Write button". You have now changed your phones product code! You can double check this by clicking the read button again, this should show your new product code.
4. You may at this stage wish to back up you contacts/files to carry over to the unbranded phone, to do this use Backup utility within the Nokia PC Suite.
5. You now just have to install the new firmware update. Make sure that you phone is connected to you computer through the USB cable and then open the Nokia Software Updater that you previously downloaded. Follow the step by step instructions and install the new firmwear. Do not at any time disconnect the phone until it tells you that it is safe to do so. Note the phone will restart itself during the update process.
6. That's it, you phone has now been debranded! You can now restore your files/contacts by going back into the Backup utility, however I suggest that you do not restore settings to the phone as this puts back some annoying operator defaults such has changed menu layouts.
7. If you wish to update your phones firmwear in the future you simply need to use the Nokia Updater as usual as your phones product code will not need changing again.
I hope that this is useful, if you have any criticisms or suggestions please do leave suggestions and I will adjust the guide accordingly. In addition if anybody thinks that screen shots would be useful then let me know and I will upload them.
Cheers,

SE P990/M600/W950 tips : Hidden Service Menu
There is a hidden service menu in Sony Ericsson UIQ 3 smartphones. It can be accessed in Flip closed mode on the main screen (so called “Activity menu”) or using the virtual phone keypad in Phone application. In emergency (e.g. when you need to reformat the phone) the engineering menu can also be accessed on the “Enter PIN” screen after turning the phone on.
To activate the hidden menu close the flip or use the virtual keypad and enter the following combination:
jog dial up * jog dial down jog dial down * jog dial down *
The Service information screen contains following options: Service information, Service tests and Format internal disk.
Service information menu displays information about phone model, software (firmware) versions, IMEI number of the device, information about sim-locks and a list of supported GSM/UMTS bands and speech codec rates.
Service tests section lets you test various hardware components of your device, including speakers, microphone, keyboard, camera, touch screen, vibrator, memory card and more.
The “Format internal disk” function lets you fully format the internal storage memory of your phone. This is useful if you want to get rid of all your data (e.g. when you’re going to sell the phone) or if you are experiencing problems with the device.

K310@W200 / W200 Debranding Firmware
Any questions are welcomed
For now , i'll start whit some tutorials
1) Debranding / Changing firmware
To debrand means taking off the brands of u're operator , with a new clean firmware . That's why debranding/changing firmware are about the same. ( changing firmware = upgrade the soft version of the phone )
Before starting ,turn your phone off.
Before u begin to change the software u must have installed Sony Ericsson Pc Suite and Sony Ericsson Update Suite , else nothing will work
W200 debranding - by DCU-60 cable for DB2010/DB2012 CID52 RED
1. Download those files:
*setool2lite_v1[1].08
*W200_FS_MEDITERR_R4HA014_RED52_ONLY1.fbn
*W200_MAIN_GENERIC_R4HA014_RED52_ONLY1.mbn
*w200_Melinda_Generic_CDA102737_4_R1A_GENERIC_MEDITERR (alternative download link)
( u have to click on "Descarca acum" to download the files from netdrive.ws )
2. Backup ALL your phone information (Images, Videos, Contacts, Notes, etc.).
When we convert it, we will lose all the data ( the contacts on the sim & stuff on card will not be deleted )
*MyPhoneExplorer
Now uncompress setool2lite_108.rar (this one in a new folder)
--- do not uncompress Melinda_Generic_CDA102737_4_R1A_GENERIC_MEDITERR , the ZIP archive has to remain intact for proper use;
Enter the folder where we uncompressed "Seetool2" and excecute
Close your Sony Ericsson W200 (turn off).
[now in se-tool..]
- In Phone Type put W200
- Click on Read GDFS ( this will back up your GDFS. The GDFS is the most important thing in your phone , so we have to make a back up of it.. . If u damage the GDFS u can say goodbye to the phone , so be carrefull & never use the "write gdfs" option in Se-tool . Use it on your one risk ,or if u know what u are doing ! )
- Now ,after pressing Read GDFS , a dialog shows up in se-tool saying "Hold C and insert cable" . Press C in your phone and connect the USB cable.

- [Back to se-tool] In Files, click on ADD and we load the FS(W200_FS_MEDITERR_R4HA014_RED52_ONLY1.fbn)MAIN and the (W200_MAIN_GENERIC_R4HA014_RED52_ONLY1.mbn) files
- In MISC files we add the custom files ( in those are stored the language of the phone )(CDA) ( if u don't agree with the language in this custom pack , u can search for another that fits u're language needs )
- Click on FLASH ( now the process of flashing your phone begins ).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------customization-------------------
Every one of us whant's to get the best from his phone. After debranding it , u can now do things that weren't possible before because of the operator restrictions. You can now customize your phone.
2) Adding flash themes
Flash themes are composed of two files : the flash menu ( .swf ) and the theme itself ( .thm ) . Whithout the .thm file , the flash menu's won't work
Download :
- flash menu ( .swf)
- theme ( .thm)
To add flash files into the phone with se-tool u must respect the path.
To work , the swf. files must go in a certain folder from the phone , that respect a "path" like this one : "tpa/preset/system/desktop/flash" ( in the folder "flash" , u put the .swf files). After creating those folders , u create a zip archive of the "tpa/preset/system/desktop/flash" , and then u put it in MISC in Se-tool. Then u click Flash , press C ,connect cable , and wait for se-tool to upload the files. After the files are uploaded , turn the phone on , connect it to your usb cable , and using Phone Explorer upload the .thm files.
And you are ready to go
U can always add more flash menu's by the method shown above, they don't have to be a certain resolution , because the *.swf resizes to any screen ( for exmple a flash menu 240x320 will work on 128x160 too )
How to: Incorporate Standby SWF into THM files
later edit : more themes & more flash menus
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3) Adding acoustic drivers
Acoustics goes to : "\ifs\settings\acoustic\" [ this is the "path" in your phone ]
Create a zip archive of Ifs , put it in Misc in Se-tool , and after u click on flash
The best part of the w200 , represents the sound
Unfortunately , most of the acoustics over the net ,arren't working very well whit the w200 , some of them even creating problems , like the distorsion of the sound when u listen to the radio , like the microfone that doesen't work on the headset..etc.
That's why ,i advice you tu use only the loudspeaker part of the acoustic pack , because it hasn't got any problems , and it affects only the sound on the speaker part ( now it's looooud
-
-
I saw that most of you guys after adding other acoustics (full packs ) that were not designed for the w200, are having problem with the sound ( like the mic that doesn't work in the handsfree, the sound that's not balanced on the radio .. ).
Here's what u have to do :
first ,u create a notepad file whit this text in it :
chdir:/ifs/settings/acoustic
listfiles:
- this command checks the acoustic directory , and lists the files
- after the files are listed , you copy them in notepad , where u leave only the *.apf files , like this :
ex: VHF_ring.apf
VHF_play.apf
VHF_hce-60_ring.apf
VHF_hce-60_play.apf
VHF_hce-60_call.apf
VHF_hca-60_ring.apf
..and then u put "DELFILE:" in front of every file
ex: delfile:VHF_ring.apf
delfile:VHF_play.apf
delfile:VHF_hce-60_ring.apf
delfile:VHF_hce-60_play.apf
delfile:VHF_hce-60_call.apf
delfile:VHF_hca-60_ring.apf

here is the notepad command to delete the files :
u save the notepad file with the "delfile" command , and u add it in MISc in Se-tool , u press write script , and..that's it
To check if everything has been deleted u create a new notepad file with this command :
chdir:/ifs/settings/acoustic
listfiles:
(..and u add it to misc in se tool..write script )
now the directory is clear , and u can load a new set of acoustic drivers.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4) -- You don't like how the walkman looks like?
1. Dezarchive the folder "skinuri.rar"
2. Pick a skin ( U can create your own skin if u know how to edit pictures
3. add the files into a folder ( a path ) : tpa\system\multimedia\mp (you have an exemple into the archive i attached) then create a zip archive of the folder like this "tpa.zip"
--> walkman player skins ( for 128x160 ) :
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5) Adding a camdriver
Camdrivers goes here : "ifs/settings/camera/"
Zip Archive of Ifs , put it in Misc in Se-tool , and after u click on flash
Sadly...
The camdriver 3.25 arrived , and here are the improvements :
-> true color function
-> fixed luminozity & clarity
-> the zoomed pictures at 320x240 come now more clearly
-> the senzor is now more sensible to light
-> less noise , it only appears when taking photos in very low-light enviroments ( especially in the night )
-- camdriver 3.25 ( high picture & video qualitty ) ( the good version )
:
-- camdriver 7.5 final version ( the final version developed by brazuka for w200 , fully working )
:
If u need a camdriver that has a greate video ( shoots movie @ a maximum of 28fps ), then u should use camdriver 3.25. After adding more mhz to the driver ( from 13 to 48 mhz ) , a progress in the video has been observed. Now , in good light conditions the camera shoots a movie @ 20-25fps ( the maximum recorded was @ 28 fps ) , @ night it shoot arround 15-20 fps .
The decision is up to you . Many people said that v3.25 is better the v7.5 , but others prefered 7.5 instead.
Both of the camdrivers are fully working , the only thing is on 3.25 on video ( some desyncronizations appear , but more fps can be acheived ).
Known facts about camdriver 3.25 ( this is the beta3 version ) : desyncronizations in video , in zoom 4x , & somethimes u need to restart the camera ( turn off , and then on ) to reset it's luminosity.
-- or use the upgraded version of the original camdriver :
( this one is just slightly better then the original version , it just fixes some minor stuff ; it's worst then camdriver v3.25. Anyway , the "number" of the camdrivers is relative , because it hasn't got to much to do with the performances of the camera , for exemple camdriver v3.25 is newer and improoved then 4.5 , so stay in touch , the latest one will be the first to be posted )
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6) Adding the display driver (w200 dispdriver)
The dispdriver goes to : "ifs/settings/display"
Zip Archive of Ifs , put it in Misc in Se-tool , and after u click on flash
A new display driver has been released.
Now the colors are more accentuated and more defined.
- here is the new display driver :
- here is the original dislpay driver :
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7) Adding a new layout
The layout goest to : "\tpa\system\layout"
Zip Archive of Ifs , put it in Misc in Se-tool , and after u click on flash
The layout file , is the one that takes care about the standby screen..about the fonts , text..stuff like that .
Who doesn't like the data , time & operator logo , they can be removed by adding a new layout file
-->
--> Or u can keep the date & time , and just remove the logo operator :
--> if u don't like it u can switch back to the original one :
to see the time&date u can wait untill the screensaver comes on , or u can go to pictures and view this flash file :
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8) Changing the normal screensaver , with a flash one
The shortcut* of the flash file goes to : "tpa\system\settings"
The flash file goes to : "usb\other"
At the end , u make a ZIP archive of both things ( togheter ) , put it in Misc , and after press Flash in Se-tool
Because w200 doesn't allow us to put flash files as screensavers , we must create a tweak for that. First , a shortcut that contains the address to the flash file. After that , the phone will put as default the flash screensaver choosen by u. If u don't like the flash file located in the zip Archive , don't worry , u don't have to reflash to gain another one. Just pick some of u're favorite flash files , and upload them to "other" folder in the phone . Then , rename them into "iphone" , and that's it , next time u'll lock your phone , u'll see u're flash file set as screensaver ( wallpaper as flash not recomanded , because of meny meny bugs )
-->
-->Flash Screensavers PacK - nice sh*t
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9) Removing shutter (camera) sound
By replacing the internal shutter sound , with an empty one , u will get no sound when taking pictures in normal mode ( not only in silent mode ) . To do that , we have to replace camerashutter2 located here in "tpa\preset\system\sound" ( zip archive , add in Misc in Se-tool , press flash ). After u flash this archive to your phone , go to camera , select More , go to Shutter sound , and select Shutter sound 2 ( this is the empty one created by us )
-->
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
10) Changing the display of the pictures ( 3x3 thumbnails , instead of 2x2 )
Some of you may have seen on other phones that the pictures are displayed 3x3 .
There's very simple how to do it. You only need to open notepad , add some values , and save them as "cutomize_upgrade.xml" . Then , the file is stored in tpa/preset/custom
( zip archive of tpa , add in misc in se-tool ,then press flash ).
-->
If u don't like them , u can edit the customize_upgrade , and change the value to 2x2 instead of 3x3 .
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
11) Changing the "phone name" ( Model info )
More simple than that it can't be. We've seen that editing the customize_upgrade.xml we can do a lot of things. Now we can even change the Model of the phone , from "W200i" to "My super cool-W200" ( lol ).
u just have to edit the customize_upgrade.xml as shown bellow.
Open an empty notepad , and past this info.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nokia N78 Review

I haven't had much hands on time with the N78. I recall seeing an early prototype at a testing session, and I was less than impressed. When the handset was officially announced, I was at a press event at the Nokia store in London. Seeing the handset there, I changed my mind and thought it could be a worthy successor to the almost mythical N73.

phone. (backup everything first)

how to fix your loose slider Nokia N95
by the way SHAME ON YOU NOKIA! i just dont find it acceptable to go through this with a 2007 model $1000 device...
To ones waiting for the 2nd batch of n95 with perfect sliders, well I really doubt that nokia will modify anything on the future n95 production. Because if they do so they will be legally obliged to call back all the n95 sold around the world and replace the phones or refund the customers…
Please note that I accept no liability whatsoever if anything happens to your phone during the process but I can assure you that the following method is without any risk of damage to the phone. Nothing can go wrong if you follow exactly what I tell you to do!
click on the images below to view in full size.
here is what you need;
-a t5 torx screwdriver
-some clear cellotape
-scissors
-a pair of tweezers or anything else as long as thinner than a finger nail. nothing sharp though!
-20min of your day
-and some courage!
.jpg)
lets understand why the n95 has got a loose/wobbly slider?
I think the following pictures will explain it to you pretty clearly;
so all we gotta do is to put some cellotape between the gap
now I know that some n95 are more loose than the others so you gotta choose where to put the cellotape.
Options;
1. just a tiny bit loose
2. just a tiny bit loose but big gap under the "end" key
3. if its quite loose
4. if its motherF loose!
Results after putting the cellotape;
1. stiff slider
2. a very stiff slider
3. a super stiff slider
4. a motherF stiff slider
the process;
wash your hands(you don’t want to do the job with oily fingers), switch off your phone, revome the battery cover, take the battery out and simply pop off the back cover. So easy look;

then simply unscrew the 6 screws located on the side with your t6 screwdriver. During this process always hold the lcd part against the body.

once unscrewed all the screws again by holding both the lcd part and the body together with your fingers and by using your nail pop off the metallic covers located on each side. Here is the metallic cover shown with an arrow;
here is what you are going to see underneath the metallic covers;

so here is the only part where you gotta be little carefull. When slider in closed position simply lift slowly the lcd part of the phone from the body vertically! You are going to hear a little click, don’t worry nothing happened, its just the slider mechanism.
Then take off the plastic things located on each side and put the phone on a flat surface like a table lying on the lcd side.
Now its time to stick some cellotape on the inside of each plactic part;

like on this pic make sure that you stick the cellotape inside the curve properly; (this is where you are going to use the tweezers or something thin)

its time to cut properly the cellotape;

job done;

its time to assemble the phone. first put back the lcd on the body, now click in left plastic part, then the right plastic part. But when putting back the plactic parts back in make sure that the sliding part of the lcd goes into the cellotape like this;

put back the metallic covers and screws, then the cover and voila!
Check your slider? So feel much better doesn’t it? No more wobble! No more play! No more noise when pressing the navigation button!
Although there will still be a gap on the bottom side of the phone it wont wobble…

Ok I know the slider has become very stiff but after a few days it would just be perfect. Try to play with it even 5 minutes of sliding it up and down will make a difference. lets say that you are unhappy with the stiffness in 3 days simply switch to another option by adding or removing some cellotape. but i'd still advice you to start with option 1.
To help you slide the lcd part easier you may also stick a small silicon sticker similar to this one;

i personally went for the 3nd option although the slider on my 5th n95 was only a little bit loose. i quite like a stiff sliding mechanism so that my phone wont slide up and down when putting it my pocket.
take care and good luck!
