how to fix your loose slider Nokia N95

Here is a guide explaining you how to fix your loose slider with a screwdriver and some cellotape. i've had 5 n95 so far. all had loose sliders. In the end I just decided to fix it myself.
by the way SHAME ON YOU NOKIA! i just dont find it acceptable to go through this with a 2007 model $1000 device...

To ones waiting for the 2nd batch of n95 with perfect sliders, well I really doubt that nokia will modify anything on the future n95 production. Because if they do so they will be legally obliged to call back all the n95 sold around the world and replace the phones or refund the customers…

Please note that I accept no liability whatsoever if anything happens to your phone during the process but I can assure you that the following method is without any risk of damage to the phone. Nothing can go wrong if you follow exactly what I tell you to do!

click on the images below to view in full size.

here is what you need;

-a t5 torx screwdriver
-some clear cellotape
-scissors
-a pair of tweezers or anything else as long as thinner than a finger nail. nothing sharp though!
-20min of your day
-and some courage!

lets understand why the n95 has got a loose/wobbly slider?

I think the following pictures will explain it to you pretty clearly;

so all we gotta do is to put some cellotape between the gap

now I know that some n95 are more loose than the others so you gotta choose where to put the cellotape.

Options;

1. just a tiny bit loose
2. just a tiny bit loose but big gap under the "end" key
3. if its quite loose
4. if its motherF loose!

Results after putting the cellotape;

1. stiff slider
2. a very stiff slider
3. a super stiff slider
4. a motherF stiff slider

the process;

wash your hands(you don’t want to do the job with oily fingers), switch off your phone, revome the battery cover, take the battery out and simply pop off the back cover. So easy look;

then simply unscrew the 6 screws located on the side with your t6 screwdriver. During this process always hold the lcd part against the body.

once unscrewed all the screws again by holding both the lcd part and the body together with your fingers and by using your nail pop off the metallic covers located on each side. Here is the metallic cover shown with an arrow;

here is what you are going to see underneath the metallic covers;

so here is the only part where you gotta be little carefull. When slider in closed position simply lift slowly the lcd part of the phone from the body vertically! You are going to hear a little click, don’t worry nothing happened, its just the slider mechanism.

Then take off the plastic things located on each side and put the phone on a flat surface like a table lying on the lcd side.

Now its time to stick some cellotape on the inside of each plactic part;

like on this pic make sure that you stick the cellotape inside the curve properly; (this is where you are going to use the tweezers or something thin)

its time to cut properly the cellotape;

job done;

its time to assemble the phone. first put back the lcd on the body, now click in left plastic part, then the right plastic part. But when putting back the plactic parts back in make sure that the sliding part of the lcd goes into the cellotape like this;

put back the metallic covers and screws, then the cover and voila!

Check your slider? So feel much better doesn’t it? No more wobble! No more play! No more noise when pressing the navigation button!

Although there will still be a gap on the bottom side of the phone it wont wobble…

Ok I know the slider has become very stiff but after a few days it would just be perfect. Try to play with it even 5 minutes of sliding it up and down will make a difference. lets say that you are unhappy with the stiffness in 3 days simply switch to another option by adding or removing some cellotape. but i'd still advice you to start with option 1.

To help you slide the lcd part easier you may also stick a small silicon sticker similar to this one;

i personally went for the 3nd option although the slider on my 5th n95 was only a little bit loose. i quite like a stiff sliding mechanism so that my phone wont slide up and down when putting it my pocket.

take care and good luck!

Tips And Trick Hack And Phracking Nokia N95

Here you will find common tips and tricks for your N95 device..

  • If you dont long-press the menu key - another way to see if you have apps running in the background is to view the menu in icon mode. Usually there's a small "C" on the upper right of each icon, or on the folder where it's located, indicating that an app is currently running there. This is very useful coz it enables you to gain more memory.
  • Ever had a time when you forgot to lock your keys after closing the slider? The n95 lets you input a specific time when you want the keys locked. Just to menu/tools/setting/general/security/phone and sim/.... then choose user-defined in the 'phone autolock period', then just put in how many minutes you want.
  • Unlike the 6280 and E65, the N95 does not hang up the call when you close the slide. So after the dialing the number you're calling - you can close the slide and have a more compact phone to hold.
  • Increase your RAM by deleting the "Welcome" application in your phone. Delete also other apps that you're not using - like the 'Search" app.
  • Want to "hide" some pictures so that it doesn't show up in your Gallery? You can move the photos to another folder in your phone. Like the "my videos" folder. These photos can still be seen and viewed by a 3rd party photo viewer or a file manager - but at least, now when you open the gallery - they wont show up.
  • If you have a lot of videos (mp4, 3gp, etc) on your phone, it's always better to arrange them in subfolders. Dont keep more than 130 clips in one folder, if over that, just make another subfolder then put another 130 clips there, and so on and on. If having more than 130 clips - it slows down the phone to unbearable speeds when previewing them in the gallery.
  • Once every few weeks, especially if you add and delete photos in your gallery, you should delete the "_pAlbtn" subfolder in your "Images" folder. (Use a file xplorer to view and delete this, or use your PC). This would refresh the entire gallery - and would ensure that your thumbnails are updated. If you delete this folder and dont view the images - it will temporarily give you more space in your memory card.
  • Set your call LOG to 10 days or less - this will help in speeding up your phone.
  • When connected to a TV or Widescreen monitor, and you're viewing smartmovie movies, try this out. Instead of sliding the slider to make it horizontal, a better way is to set smartmovie to 'portrait' mode. It shows up as landscape on the TV - and there's definitely less pixelation on the picture. (than when sliding the slider to horizontal and 'forcing' the phone to compensate.)
  • Make your Ringtone horrendously loud by turning ON the 3D Ringtone.
  • Unless you have a good reason not to, just change your network to "GSM" only... to conserve battery.
  • Also turn the WLAN search to off when you're not using it. This conserves battery as well.
  • Using GPS, click on options/view/satellite info, then after you got a good satellite status say 3 to 5 you can then click back and it will make your connection faster.
  • You can hold down the pound key (#) when in the standby menu, to activate the 'silent mode' in your phone.
  • Don’t use the red ("hangup") key to exit an application. In many apps, this just keeps it in the background, eating up memory and slowing down your phone.
  • You can change the shortcuts on the home screen to the apps you use most frequently by going to Settings/General/Personalisation/Standby Mode/Shortcuts.
  • Ever have a problem when installing themes.... and the dreaded "expired certificate" error message pops up? This is mainly due to the fact the licensed signed certificate that nokia gave for the thememaker has a 1 year validity period - if you're just installing this old theme, and its more than a year old, you'll get that message. Simple solution is to go to the calendar of your 95, set the date back one year, or maybe 8 months - then install the theme you wanted. Restart the phone, then set the correct time again, and you're done.
