Prime using iPhone 3G unlock matrix: even Optimus Prime can't unlock iPhone 3G
Even before the iPhone 3G is released on July 11th, there's already one method for unlocking the handset from AT&T - unfortunately it's a costly one.

Basically, you just do buy a two year contract from AT&T, so you can get out of the store with your iPhone, then cancel the contract after you leave. You'll have to pay a $36 activation fee and a $175 early terminaton fee, meaning you just paid $411 for a new iPhone... $12 more than they cost a month ago.
After your free from AT&T, it's assumed that you'll be able to unlock the iPhone 3G with a slightly modified version of existing unlocking software, that part will free online.
However, thanks to Apple's decision not to sell iPhones online or without a carrier plan, the best hope for getting unlocked iPhones might be if somewhere else in the world there's a local legal loophole that forces Apple to sell iPhones without a carrier plan, and hope they find their way onto the internet.
